In a 2024 survey of healthcare consumers in the UAE, 84% said they trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation from a friend or family member. Even more striking: 72% said a clinic’s Google rating was ‘very important’ or ‘extremely important’ in their decision-making process. For healthcare providers, this means your online reputation isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s your most critical marketing asset.
The Maths of Reputation
Consider this scenario: two dental clinics are both advertising on Google in the same area. Clinic A has a 4.2-star rating with 28 reviews. Clinic B has a 4.8-star rating with 187 reviews. Even with identical ads and identical pricing, Clinic B will win the majority of new patient clicks — not because of their marketing, but because of their reputation. Review volume and recency both matter enormously.
The impact of star rating on click-through rates:
- 4.9 stars: highest CTR (patients feel confident)
- 4.7–4.8 stars: strong performance
- 4.5–4.6 stars: acceptable but losing ground to higher-rated competitors
- Below 4.5: significant drop in conversion; patients move on
- Below 4.0: major credibility red flag for new patients
The Problem: Satisfied Patients Don't Leave Reviews
Here’s the frustrating reality: unhappy patients are 5x more likely to leave a review than happy ones. Patients who have a great experience with your clinic generally just… leave, feeling satisfied. They don’t think to share that experience online. Meanwhile, the rare patient who had a bad experience — justified or not — often goes straight to Google to write a 1-star review.
The solution isn’t to fight negative reviews (though handling them professionally matters — more on that below). The solution is to systematically generate a high volume of positive reviews that drown out the occasional negative one and paint an accurate picture of your clinic.
Building a Review Generation System
The 3-step review generation framework:
- Step 1 — Ask in-person: Train reception staff to briefly mention reviews after a positive interaction. A simple 'We'd really appreciate it if you could leave us a Google review — it helps us reach more patients who need our care' is highly effective.
- Step 2 — Follow up via WhatsApp: 30–60 minutes after the appointment, send a WhatsApp message with a direct link to your Google review page. Keep it warm and brief.
- Step 3 — Email follow-up: For patients who didn't respond to WhatsApp, follow up with an email 24 hours later. Include the review link prominently.
How to Respond to Negative Reviews (Without Making It Worse)
Negative reviews are inevitable in healthcare. A patient misunderstood their treatment plan. A waiting room was delayed. A staff member had an off day. How you respond to these reviews matters enormously to prospective patients who read them.
DOs and DON'Ts of negative review responses:
- DO: Respond within 24 hours, publicly and professionally
- DO: Acknowledge the concern without admitting liability
- DO: Invite the patient to contact you privately to resolve the issue
- DON'T: Reveal any patient information in your response (HIPAA/DHA compliance)
- DON'T: Get defensive or argue with the patient publicly
- DON'T: Ignore the review — silence looks like indifference
Platforms That Matter for UAE Healthcare
While Google is king, UAE healthcare patients also consult Doctify (a healthcare-specific review platform), Trustpilot, Zocdoc, and clinic-specific Facebook pages. Ensure you have claimed and optimised your profiles on all relevant platforms, not just Google. A strong presence across multiple platforms also improves your search engine rankings.
